The Tax Foundation: "Trump Tariffs: The Economic Impact of the Trump Trade War"

The Foundation conducted a deep and extensive analysis of President Trump's economic and tariff policies, and compiled their findings in an extensive report. It's an estimated 32 minute read - but we read it so you don't have to!

The Breakdown:

  • President Trump’s proposed and current tariffs would dramatically raise taxes on imported goods—covering over 70% of everything the U.S. brings in from other countries. These tariffs include penalties on products from China, Canada, Mexico, and others, targeting items like steel, cars, and even products tied to fentanyl concerns.

  • If fully enacted, these tariffs would be the biggest U.S. tax increase since 1993. They’d raise prices for everyday Americans, costing the average household an extra $1,243 in 2025 alone. The tariffs would also shrink the U.S. economy by about 1%, slash imports by nearly $800 billion, and reduce the income people take home after taxes. On top of that, other countries are already hitting back with their own tariffs, hurting U.S. exports and further slowing growth.
