Understanding Why Supporting Ukraine Matters

The defense of Ukraine is, at its core, a defense of democracy. When Russia launched its invasion in 2022, it was not only attacking a neighboring country—it was challenging the very principle that nations have the right to choose their own leaders, chart their own path, and live under systems of government rooted in the consent of the governed.

The fight in Ukraine is about more than geography—it is about democracy itself. When Russia launched its invasion, it was not just attempting to conquer land. It was trying to deny Ukrainians the right to choose their own leaders and chart their own future. Supporting Ukraine is, therefore, not only a matter of foreign policy—it is a test of whether free nations will stand together in defense of democracy.

History shows us what happens when aggression goes unchecked. Authoritarian powers grow bolder, international agreements lose meaning, and democracy everywhere becomes weaker. But when democracies unite—as we have in support of Ukraine—we send a clear message: borders cannot be erased by force, and the will of the people cannot be silenced by tanks.

For Americans, standing with Ukraine also reinforces the values we hold at home. Free and fair elections, accountable leaders, and the rule of law are principles worth defending both here and abroad. Supporting Ukraine is not charity; it is an affirmation that democracy is stronger when nations stand together.

By helping Ukraine, we help safeguard democracy itself—for their future, and for ours.
