How a Law is Made

The process of how a law is made in the United States begins with an idea. This idea can come from anyone, but it must be proposed by a member of Congress to start the process.

When the idea is written, proposed, and submitted, it becomes what is called a bill. Once the bill is introduced, it is assigned to a committee that specializes in the subject matter of the bill, such as education, healthcare, or the environment.
